Smoky Lapsang Rum: A Tea-Infused Twist on Classic Rum - Toss&Brew

When it comes to unique cocktail infusions, tea and spirits make an unexpectedly perfect match. One of the most intriguing combinations?

Lapsang Souchong and rum.Lapsang Souchong, a traditional Chinese black tea, is famous for its deep, smoky aroma, achieved by drying the tea leaves over pinewood fires. This bold, almost whiskey-like smokiness makes it an excellent pairing for rum, a spirit known for its caramelized sweetness and tropical warmth. By cold-brewing Lapsang Souchong in rum, we allow the tea’s smoky, earthy notes to blend naturally with the spirit, creating a smoother, more complex drink without any bitterness.

This infusion method brings out a rich, layered depth—enhancing the vanilla and spice of the rum while mellowing its alcohol bite. The result? A perfectly balanced, smoky, and slightly sweet infusion that can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or mixed into creative cocktails.

What You’ll Need

✔ 7g Lapsang Souchong tea leaves (Use high-quality loose leaf for the best flavour)
✔ 200ml rum (Light or dark rum both work, but dark rum enhances the smoky notes)


How to Make Cold-Brewed Lapsang Rum

Step 1: Combine Ingredients

In a sealed glass jar or bottle, add 7g of Lapsang Souchong to 200ml of rum.

Step 2: Cold Brew for Flavor Extraction

Let the mixture infuse for at least 6 hours at room temperature. For a stronger tea flavor, you can extend the infusion time up to 12 hours+.

Step 3: Strain & Serve

Once infused, strain out the tea leaves using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth. Your Smoky Lapsang Rum is now ready to enjoy!
